2nd Lower Manhattan Starbucks Unionizes: 'Makes It All Worth It'

LOWER MANHATTAN, NY — A second Starbucks in Lower Manhattan has officially unionized, organizers announced on Friday. Workers at the Astor Place Starbucks voted 11-2 to unionize, which was confirmed by the National Relations Board. The Starbucks at 13-25 Astor Pl. joins the Meatpacking District location as the only two in New York City to unionize. "Winning the election for us is huge, it means we are a step closer towards a better future for Starbucks partners," Owen Burnham, an employee at the Astor Place location, said in a news release. "Our partners and organizing committee have faced adversity with resilience, and this win makes it all worth it. Knowing we are part of a nationwide effort, we are honored to stand with our organizing stores, and looking forward to the road ahead," he added. Starbucks employees part of the union and union effort refer to themselves as partners. There are currently nine pending elections for Starbucks in New York to unionize and roughly 250 nationwide. The Astor Place Starbucks unionization is the 41st in the country to do so. "For me, winning the election is more than just an accomplishment. It's a step closer to truly living up to the 'partners for partners' motto," Edwin Palma Solis, a different Astor Place employee, said in a news release.
