DETROIT — Two young girls were attacked by two pit bulls Thursday during recess at a Detroit elementary school on the city's west side, multiple reports said, citing school officials. The two 10-year-old girls were taken to the hospital with bite wounds and were listed in stable condition, officials said. The attack happened at 1 p.m. during recess at Bates Academy, which is located on the 19700 block of Wyoming Avenue, when officials said some students were playing with the dogs on an open playground behind the school. School officials told the students to get away from the dogs, but some kids, including the two young girls, stuck around and kept playing with the dogs. That's when officials said at least one of the dogs started chasing students, eventually biting the girls. Animal control officers captured one of the dogs, but they were still searching for the other one Thursday afternoon, officials said. School officials planned to hold a controlled release Friday, ensuring the children's safety.
