AGAR presents Roanoke-based Latin jazz band LOS GATOS performing together for the first time since 2008 at Second Stage I Amherst. On May 13, 2022 at 7 pm Amherst Glebe Arts Response (AGAR) will present LOS GATOS ("The Cats"). Los Gatos is a Latin jazz group based in Roanoke, Virginia. It was developed through the merger of musical influences of musicians from different regions. The members of Los Gatos have played with Latin Jazz Project, Latin Heat, Solazo, and other groups. Their performances take the listener on a trip to distant lands, drawing on repertoire that includes traditional African rhythms, Caribbean influences and traditional song forms. Los Gatos seamlessly melds these musical idioms with contemporary jazz styles to produce music for all listeners to enjoy. Chris Magee, the group’s trumpet player, said, “Los Gatos was active on the Roanoke music scene from 2006 - 2009, and we decided to revive the band in 2021. Our performance at Second Stage will be our first performance since 2009.” Performing on the 13th with Los Gatos will be:• Chris Magee: trumpet, flugelhorn; Greg Moody: saxophones/woodwinds; Ken Hitchcock: saxophones/woodwinds; Sue Halloran: vocals; Lenny Marcus: keyboards, flute; Jeff Hofmann: acoustic and electric bass; Vladimir Espinoza: congas/percussion; David Sandoval: bongos/percussion; Larry Scott: drums/percussion On May 13th, Los Gatos will premiere their arrangements of Chick Corea works: "Armando's Rhumba" "La Fiesta" "Spain," and "The One Step." Los Gatos will also play tunes from their repertoire in the 2000's: "Afro Blue;" "La Campiña;" "Los Gatos;" and other tunes that do not fall into either of the categories above.
