Description
Take a closer look at what retirement may look like as a new wave of individuals begin or consider this next step of life. What roles will one have? What will be the challenges and what will be the things to truly look forward to? How can one be better prepared for this journey? This free conference is for those who are looking toward retirement, those who have loved ones who are or will be retiring soon, and those who have entered retirement and are navigating it. The Bartholomew County Financial Literacy Coalition, Mill Race Center, Thrive Alliance, and Just Friends are jointly planning The Age Wave Conference, June 17th at Mill Race Center. The speaker for this event is being sponsored by WWA Planning & Investments. The meal is being sponsored by Vivera Senior Living; Voelz, Reed, & Mount Law; and Findley Law. Registration is to be done through Eventbrite by Friday, June 10th. For more information, please call Mill Race Center, 812.376.9241. AGENDA: 9:30 – Registration packet pick up 10:00-10:30—Opening Remarks (Taking a look at the demographics of our community related to age.) 10:30—12:00—The Cost of Caregiving - There are different types of caregiving that take place within retirement (i.e. spouse, grandchildren, disabled child). Some of these may even be the reason someone may decide to retire. 12:00—1:00—Keynote with Dr. Phil Stafford and Lunch Cultural anthropologist Phil Stafford has a different take on the aging process. Instead of thinking of aging in physical terms, he sees aging as a cultural phenomenon. This makes a world of difference in the ways we think about aging. It shifts our attention away from the individual aging body (where all the anti-aging products are sold) to the subject of aging in community. It suggests that aging is not about time and the body but about place, and the meaning of relationships. It suggests that aging is not about consumption but about production – the production of a meaningful life, the production of good works in the community, the production of memory and a legacy. In his talk, Phil will elaborate on this model of aging and what it means for the place of older adults in the community, for the health care system, for the planning of our shared future. 1:00-2:00—Panel on Retirement (Panel will consist of individuals with various experiences causing retirement and ways to deal with retirement.)
