Political Discourse: How We Use the Terms Fascism and Socialism

Presentation by Political Science Professor Dr. Carl Luna followed by discussion of political discourse and the use and misuse of terms like What do the words “Socialism” or “Fascism” mean to you? Are you worried about the way these terms are used in our current public discourse? How do political scientists describe these terms? Can names really hurt? Where on the political spectrum do you stand? Come to our Hot Topic meeting on Monday, May 16, 2022 to hear a local political expert discuss this and to have the chance to discuss it with a small group. This event will be at the community room of All Souls’ Episcopal Church at 1475 Catalina Blvd from 5-7pm. We will offer light snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. This is a newly renovated space where we can have windows and doors open for ventilation. There is ample parking. It will be a wonderful opportunity to see old and new League friends in person, as well as discuss an important topic. We hope to see people of all ages and especially younger people who can join us after work. It will be a lovely time to all be together after the days of Covid separation. We will have a social hour from 5:00-5:30pm with snacks and light beverages. Beginning at 5:30pm we will have a presentation on the topic by Carl Luna, political science professor at USD and regular local political commentor. This will be followed by small group discussions at which everyone will have a chance to voice opinions on this topic and to hear what others are thinking, followed by a wrap-up. The League will ask for proof of vaccination or a recent negative Covid test at the welcome table for the health and safety of all.
