Disaster Animal Response Team Orientation Day
You will learn what is entailed in helping animals and their people during disasters including:
Pet Preparedness - how to prepare your own animals for DisastersIntro to Emergency Animal Sheltering Operations - volunteer roles, shelter areas and rules, shelter set up, shelter clean upBasic Animal Handling and Body Language- how to safely handle animals when they are stressed and confused and what their body language will tell you Large Animal Preparedness - how to ensure your large animals are properly prepared and cared for during a disaster. Technical Large Animal Rescue Equipment will be shown and touched up, but not demo'd. DART Equipment Trailer - a response does not happen without the proper suppliesHow to join DART - what you need to do to become a DART volunteer (hint: you are completing most requirements by attending)Through a combination of classroom lecture and hands on demonstration, you will learn the basics of responding with the DART and the important ways to include your animals in your family's emergency plans.
You will tour the DART Trailer and get to know the equipment and items needed in a sheltering operation.
We will meet in the Berkshire Humane Society Classroom - to the right of the building, upper level, follow the walkway to the classroom door. Some of the training will be hands on and take place outdoors near the DART trailer - please be prepared for some activity and for weather.
Lite lunch is provided.
**Please park on the grass in front of the building - looks for signs and/or traffic volunteer
Please bring some dog or cat food as a donation to BHS if you can.
