The 1915 exhibition brought together a community of American artists and visiting European artists to celebrate the Golden State. The painters exhibiting in 1915 were seen as breaking with tradition through their impressionistic, decorative examination of California terrain which includes the mixture of raw color, rough brushstrokes and thorough scientific examination of light and texture. About the Chair of the art department, 1915 San Diego Panama-California exposition: Alice Ellen Klauber (1871-1951) Born in San Diego, California on May 19, 1871, the daughter of Theresa Epstein and Abraham Klauber. While living with her grandparents in San Francisco, Alice attended public schools and later studied art locally at the School of Design and the ASL. She further studied with William M. Chase, Robert Henri in Spain (1907), Hans Hofmann at UC Berkeley (1930) and Alfredo Ramos Martinez (1944). As a close friend of Henri, her correspondence with him led to his visit to San Diego in 1914. Viewed today as the most important woman organizer in the cultural development of San Diego, she served as Chair for art & lectures, music, poetry & literature exhibits and lectures for the Panama-California Exposition (1915). Via Robert Henri Alice was instrumental in bringing several Ash Can and Impressionist school artists’ work for 1915 Exposition exhibits including William Glackens, Henri, George Luks, Maurice Prendergast, Joseph Sharp and John Sloan.
