PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island State Police will swear-in a new leader to the helm later this week.
Lt. Col. Darnell Weaver will be promoted to superintendent on Friday during a swearing-in ceremony, Gov. Dan McKee's office said.
Weaver, a Cranston native, will become the department's 15th superintendent and will be the first person of color to lead Rhode Island State Police.
Weaver is a 28-year veteran of the State Police and currently serves as the deputy superintendent and chief of field operations. He oversees several police units, including the detective bureau, administrative bureau and the department of public safety.
Prior to joining the State Police force, Weaver served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Superintendent Col. James Manni is stepping down after serving as head of the force since 2019. He's leaving to become the town manager in South Kingstown.
