WRIGHT COUNTY, MN — Municipalities throughout the U.S. are set to participate Saturday in National Drug Take Back Day, including Wright County. National Drug Take Back Day, sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency, urges residents to safely dispose of unused, unneeded and expired prescription drugs at community events with local police. The annual event has collected more than 15 million pounds of prescription drugs since, according to the DEA. There are many medication drop-off sites in Wright County, according to the DEA. Old and unused prescriptions pose a risk for accidental poisoning and drug abuse if left around the house, according to officials. "Properly disposing of prescription medication, such as opioids, can significantly decrease the likelihood of individuals having access to these highly addictive drugs." It can also be harmful to discard prescription drugs into the water system or landfills, as they can pollute groundwater and harm fish and wildlife, officials said.
