LOS GATOS, CA — A former Los Gatos High School student who suffered a traumatic brain injury after being hit by a car 11 years ago in San Jose died last week, according to KTVU.
Shea Olivia Maalan Shaw, 26, succumbed to her injuries from the Jan. 8, 2011 incident that happened when she was walking on the crosswalk of Camden Avenue and Bascom Avenue in San Jose.
Shaw was a sophomore in high school at the time. She and her boyfriend had just left a party when she was struck.
Shaw spent weeks in a medically-induced coma. The case to find the suspect has been reopened by San Jose police, the police officers' association said.
Shaw's mother, Cari Shaw, told KTVU that her daughter's kidneys were failing and she didn't want her to suffer anymore.
"I didn't want to torture her," Shaw said. "And so I took her home and she stayed with us until April 19. And I told her, 'Just go to heaven.'"
Police believe the car that struck Shaw was an early 2000s model gray or silver sedan of an unknown make.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Bowen of the San Jose Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit at 408-277-4654 or at [email protected].
