LAGUNA BEACH, CA — Love was in the air at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach during the first-ever wedding ceremony and reception on festival grounds, a spokesperson for the Festival of Arts said. On Saturday, Pageant of the Masters volunteers JoAnne Motter, 51, and Peter Kurtz, 48, redefined the meaning of "pageant family" when they took to the altar and spoke their vows while surrounded by hundreds of family members, friends, pageant volunteers and staff. Pageant of the Masters Director Diane Challis Davy recalled the summer Motter and Kurtz met. The couple met while volunteering for the pageant in 2016, back when the theme of the pageant was "Partners." "I have known Joanne and Peter since 2016 and it happened to be a wonderful coincidence that the theme of the Pageant was Partners. Isn't it fitting that they should meet backstage, be cast in the same picture, and now here we are at their wedding in the same place they met and fell in love?" Challis Davy said in a statement. "I wish them all the happiness in the world, and I hope they have many more years in the Pageant together." Motter and Kurtz met backstage at the Pageant of the Masters as volunteers. The couple was cast together in the live depiction of Capt. William Clark and Sacagawea in Edgar S. Paxson's "Lewis and Clark at Three Forks." Since 2016, the now-married couple has yet to share a piece together, though Kurtz is expected to make a return in the 2022 pageant production of "Wonderful World." This year's "Wonderful World" pageant production runs July 7 through Sept. 2, and residents who attend can expect to see timeless works of art recreated with the help of stage setting, lights and dedicated models.
