HARRISON, NY — As New York moves ahead with plans to reopen the economy in the wake of the new coronavirus pandemic, Wegmans Food Markets is now contemplating a fall opening for its first downstate store.
Officials at Wegmans Food Markets saw the outbreak rapidly escalating in mid-March, and made the decision then to postpone the opening date for their store in Westchester County, which had been scheduled for June 7.
What they were watching was New York's first hot spot. Westchester was the second community in New York with a case of the virus officially known as COVID-19. By March 12, when state officials aggressively ramped up their response with a virus "containment zone" and drive-through testing center in New Rochelle, there were 121 cases.
Westchester cases have climbed to 30,426 as of May 6.
Wegmans' loyal customers, who have been eagerly awaiting the iconic grocery chain's Harrison store, will have to wait some more.
Store officials told Patch a specific date has not been chosen.
