SALEM, MA — Basketball players, officials, coaches and both city and state officials are remembering Salem legend Larry McIntire for his passion for the game and the city after the Salem High Athletic Hall of Famer died Monday. He was 85. McIntire, a former Big East basketball official who founded basketball leagues in Salem involving players from throughout the North Shore, was most recently in charge of officials in the Northeastern Conference and the Cape Ann League. The longtime superintendent of the Salem Parks and Recreation Department was also a tournament assigner in the state tournament and had a high school basketball tournament in Beverly named after him 10 years ago. On behalf of the Cape Ann League and the Northeastern Conference we are very saddened to hear of the passing of Larry McIntire. Larry was our Commissioner of Basketball for many years. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.— Leslie Murray (@LeslieMurrayles) November 16, 2020 He was affectionately known as "The Commish" — a moniker he adopted for himself on his personal Twitter account. He retired two years ago. Very saddened to hear of the passing of my good friend Larry McIntire, a dedicated coach, premier basketball official, & former Superintendent of Salem Parks & Recreation, who worked tirelessly to promote the game & enhance playgrounds & courts across the city.— Sen.
