BOSTON — Chelsea is one of the hardest-hit Massachusetts communities amid the new coronavirus pandemic, with 78.31 confirmed cases for every 10,000 residents as of Tuesday. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Warren in central Massachusetts had yet to record a coronavirus case when town officials last released data April 1. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health releases the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in each of the state's 14 counties daily, but has left it up to local health officials on whether to release confirmed coronavirus cases and deaths for their municipality. Patch has begun collecting data from the towns that do release local data and has so far reviewed coronavirus cases in more than 200 Massachusetts communities. Darker pins on the map below show higher rates of infections based on the number of confirmed cases per 10,000 residents in the 111 Massachusetts towns and cities that have released case count updates since April 1. You can click on a town to see more information, including the date the data was last updated, the case count and the number of cases per 10,000 residents: Of the 111 communities included in the map above, the median was 13.13 cases per 10,000 residents in Marblehead. Health officials are quick to warn that confirmed positive tests for the coronavirus are not an accurate indicator of how prevalent the virus is in a given area. Many people who are infected with coronavirus show no symptoms, while a shortage of tests means many people who are symptomatic are treated for coronavirus without ever being tested.
