Patch Readers Say They Shopped Small, Stayed Home On Black Friday

SALEM, MA — Patch readers on the North Shore said they were more apt to shop small businesses or stay home and buy holiday gifts online instead of hitting malls and big box stores in the days following Thanksgiving this year. With rising coronavirus rates across the region, those who responded a Patch question about any change in their shopping habits cited safety and the desire to help small businesses struggling with virus-related restrictions for this year's adjustments. "Stayed put on Black Friday," one reader from North Andover said. "I've done all of my Christmas shopping already online, delivered directly to my home in most cases, while using curbside pickup in others. I've only shopped in person at a local specialty shop on one or two occasions. "Why risk it? I know many others don't feel the same, but this has worked out perfectly for me." Amid the surge in virus rates, towns like Swampscott are urging businesses that can to scale back indoor operations where possible with a focus on curbside and takeout options for merchandise and meal pickup. "Have not been a mall shopper in at least 15 years," a Salem reader said. "But I do try to buy from local businesses whenever I can." "I have only done Black Friday theater tickets half-priced online," another reader shared. "(And) I don't buy anything online ever. (Friday night) we (were) going to the mall, and maybe do some shopping, but I don't buy presents anymore. Just (give money as gifts)." While stores and restaurants remain open with a 9:30 p.m. curfew under recently announced state guidelines, some are choosing to take the "stay-at-home advisory" very seriously. "I don't go to malls, restaurants or any other public spaces," a Peabody reader said. One reader from Beverly summed up the feelings of many that year's priorities should be the shop small and stay safe. "Cases are currently higher than they were at our 'shelter-in-place' order back in March," the reader said. "Going out to big box stores puts yourself, other shoppers, and the retail workers at risk. "Plan ahead. Buy your gifts from small business this week. … Stay home. Order online from any of the big box stores."
