SALEM, MA — The first floor of the Museum Place parking garage in downtown Salem will be fully or partially closed at various times for three months beginning in late March. The city is expected to approve $1.1 million for repairs and upgrades to the garage when city council meets next week.
"I'm hopeful the City Council will approve this funding so this important work can advance on scheduled," Mayor Kim Driscoll said in a statement. "It will help extend the useful life of the garage and protect the small business owners who are mall tenants."
The repairs include addressing long-standing water leaks and other issues at the 900-car garage. The project also includes the design phase of making similar improvements to other floors of the garage in the future.
"The Museum Place Garage provides essential long-term parking downtown for our employers, customers and visitors, and also residents during snow emergencies," Driscoll said. "In addition, water infiltration issues have been a source of frustration for the merchants who have spaces in the mall below the garage."
