SALEM, MA — City officials approved a joint resolution to build a $25 million MBTA coomuter rail stop in south Salem. Salem Mayor Kim Driscoll told MassTransit, which first reported this story, that studies have shown a stop would add economic activity to the Canal Street and Jefferson Avenue areas while reducing "brutal traffic congestion" around Salem State University and North Shore Medical Center. Salem officials have discussed the project for 25 years. The local resolution asks the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the U.S. Department of Transportation to make the project a priority.
