Salem State Mourns Passing Of Former President Nancy Harrington

SALEM, MA — The Salem State University community is mourning the passing of the school's first woman president. Nancy Harrington, who died this weekend, was 81. Harrington was the school's 12th president and presided over the institution for 17 years. She was a Salem High and Salem State alumna who earned her bachelor's degree in 1960 and her master's degree in 1963. "She was a trailblazer and mentor to many," Salem State President John Keenan said in a statement. "Those of us who knew President Harrington knew of her talent, leadership and deep commitment to our students. Indeed, her vision for Salem State College paved the way for us to become Salem State University in 2010." Harrington served as president from 1990 to 2007. She was also the school's Dean of Continuing Education and Special Programs, Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education, Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs in Graduate and Continuing Education and Acting President of Academic Affairs. We are sad to report President Emerita Dr. Nancy Harrington '60, '63, '10H passed away. Salem State's first female and 12th president, she began at Salem State as a student, rising through the ranks to president where she presided for 17 years.
