As a member of the grounds team, the seasonal groundskeeper contributes to the favorable first impression from the moment guests arrive to the museum. This position is responsible for various entry-level activities including mowing, weeding, edging, planting, mulching, and watering. Our groundskeepers are expected to work in compliance with all relevant standards, regulations, and procedures to ensure the safety of themselves and others in the workplace. This position requires an individual with an eye for detail, who enjoys working outdoors in all conditions and takes pride in their work. The seasonal groundskeeper must be conscientious about efficiently completing tasks and carefully utilizing the resources of the museum. This is a full-time seasonal position, with a regular daytime schedule of Monday through Friday. Essential Duties: - Gather and remove litter and debris daily from grounds and parking garage; empty trash receptacles. - Safely operate basic groundskeeping equipment such as pruners, chainsaws, utility vehicles, tractors, skid steers, mowers, and string trimmers. - Perform warm weather seasonal tasks including but not limited to: - Mowing, edging, and trimming lawns - Caring for turf grass by topdressing, seeding, aerating, weeding, and dethatching - Pruning and trimming trees, shrubs, and hedges - Maintaining planting beds by mulching and weeding - Planting annuals, perennials, and trees - Watering - Pressure washing, cleaning windows, and participating in the parking garage washdown - Assist with maintaining grounds equipment. - Efficiently work to complete assigned tasks according to schedule and within deadlines. - Attend routine safety training, as directed. - Understand and follow all procedures for wearing any required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). - Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules, and regulations issued under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Follow operating procedures and work standards that will ensure personnel safety. - Maintain positive, respectful communications and collaboration with all levels of staff, guests, and vendors. Minimum Requirements: - High school diploma or equivalency. - 6 months’ experience in landscaping, greenhouse maintenance, or horticulture. - Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license. - Ability to be professional and courteous with general public, museum staff, and professional guests. - Must take pride in the appearance of the museum and maintain a high standard of work. - Must enjoy working outside regardless of the weather, as this position requires spending much time outdoors. - Ability to multi-task in order to meet the varying needs of the museum without compromising quality. - Strong ability to prioritize safety in the workplace and execute all necessary safety procedures related to the position. - Final candidate must consent to and successfully complete a drug screen, physical examination including a hearing test, and criminal background check as conditions of employment.
