MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, NY — A catholic school in Morningside Heights will shut down due to the "devastating financial impact" of the coronavirus outbreak on the Archdiocese of New York, church officials announced Thursday. The Corpus Christi School on West 121st Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue is one of 20 schools run by the Archdiocese that are set to close permanently, the church announced. Catholic schools have seen a low rate of registration for the upcoming school year due to wide-scale unemployment. Closures of churches for mass has also resulted in fewer donations for Catholic school scholarships. Cardinal Timothy Dolan said in a statement issued Thursday that he's "grateful more schools didn't meet this fate." "Too many have lost parents and grandparents to this insidious virus, and now thousands will not see their beloved school again. I've kept a hopeful eye on our schools throughout this saga and my prayers are with all of the children and their families who will be affected by this sad news," Dolan said. The Archdiocese of New York will work with parents to place returning students at the shuttered schools into nearby Catholic schools for the upcoming school year. The church is also planning to work with teacher's unions to reassign teachers to schools within the Archdiocese's system.
