Serrano cruised to re-election on Tuesday, defeating a Republican challenger to retain his State Senate seat in the 29th District, NY1 projected. Serrano, 48, has served in the State Senate since 2005. His district covers East Harlem and parts of the Upper East Side, as well as Roosevelt Island, the South Bronx and Central Park. His challenger was Jose A. Colon, a Republican who had previously challenged Serrano in 2016 and 2018, winning 9.6 and 7.1 percent of the vote each year, respectively. With 97 percent of in-person voting precincts reporting as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, Serrano led with 87 percent of the vote, with Colon trailing at 13 percent. New York will not begin counting absentee ballots until next week. Serrano's father, José E. Serrano, has represented the Bronx in Congress since 1990.
