“WRITING FAMILY AS MEMOIR" - a creative writing workshop w/ Curtis Chin, author, filmmaker, & co-founder of Asian-American Writers Workshop From Maxine Hong Kingston's classic "Woman Warrior" to Michelle Zauner's recent best-seller, "Crying in H Mart," memoirs by Asian American writers have often centered on family. Whether your childhood was unconventional or normal, there’s bound to be something unique and interesting about your relationships with your parents, grandparents, siblings, and even your own children. Come join us for a two-hour workshop where we will discuss the art of writing your memoir through the lens of family, as well as publishing options. During the session, participants will be asked to write from a prompt and then to share their work for feedback. Writers and aspiring writers of all cultural backgrounds are welcome. Space is limited to twelve participants. Please include a brief background of your creative writing experience as a part of your registration. ** You can send it to Eaton's director of impact, Katie Petitt at [email protected] More about Curtis Chin A graduate of the undergraduate creative program at the University of Michigan, Chin has received fellowships from ABC/Disney Television, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. He has won awards from the National Association for Multicultural Education, the National Association for Ethnic Studies, the American Librarians Association, Asian Americans Advancing Justice, and served as a Visiting Scholar at New York University. Chin has screened his films with over 600 entities in sixteen countries including the White House, Lincoln Center, Amnesty International, SXSWEdu, and the Government of Norway. Past media include CNN, MSNBC, and public radio, as well as the Economist, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and Huffington Post. As an activist, Chin co-founded the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, the premiere non-profit dedicated to promoting Asian American writers. He has also worked as the Director of Outreach for the Democratic National Committee and served on Barack Obama’s Asian American Leadership Committee during his 2008 Presidential Campaign. Chin is working on a series of short documentaries about the people fighting to preserve our nation's oldest Chinatowns.
