A Conversation about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biosecurity Advocacy with Jared Brown and Gabe Bankman-Fried, Moderated by Gloria Li Join the Future of Life Institute (FLI), Guarding Against Pandemics (GAP), and Effective Altruism DC (EA DC) as we co-host Jared Brown, Director of U.S. and International Policy at FLI, and Gabe Bankman-Fried, Founder and Executive Director of GAP, for a conversation about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biosecurity among other pressing issues. The event will be highly interactive, with a majority of the schedule allowing for engagement between attendees and with Jared and Gabe. If you are interested in effective altruism (EA), public policy, artificial intelligence, biotechnology/biorisk, nuclear security, longtermism, existential risk, global priorities research, global governance, improving institutional decision making, effective careers, and/or just want to meet others interested in EA, this event is for you. This event will be moderated by Gloria Li, McCourt Scholar at Georgetown University. About Jared Brown: Jared Brown is the Director of U.S. and International Policy at the Future of Life Institute. He is also the President of the Action Fund on Technology and Emerging Risk, a new 501(c)(4) non-profit. In both capacities, Jared is working to improve the governance of these technologies to maximize their benefits to humanity through the mitigation of the societal risks associated with their development and (mis)use. He is also focused on mitigating holistic global catastrophic risk through both national security and technology policy. His work includes direct advocacy with U.S. and international policymakers and the provision of formal advice on draft and official policy. He has spent his career working at the intersection of public policy and risk management, having previously served as an Analyst in Emergency Management and Homeland Security Policy at the U.S. Congressional Research Service and in homeland security at the U.S. Department of Transportation. He earned a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University and a B.S. in Social Psychology from the University of California, San Diego. About Gabe Bankman-Fried: Gabe Bankman-Fried is the Founder and Executive Director of Guarding Against Pandemics. Prior to that, he was a staffer on Capitol Hill and worked for Civis Analytics, where he improved private House forecasting and resource allocation models that advised Democratic Political Action Committees and large donors giving hundreds of millions of dollars in the 2018 midterm elections.
