HARLEM, NY — A fire that broke out Monday morning in a West Harlem apartment spread to a second unit and sent one person to the hospital, authorities said. The fire was reported around 6:52 a.m. Monday at 557 West 140th St., a 5-story building in Hamilton Heights between Broadway and Hamilton Place. The fire began on the third floor but had extended to the fourth floor, prompting a second alarm, an FDNY spokesperson said. More than 100 firefighters battled the blaze before getting it under control at 7:49 a.m. One civilian was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in unknown condition, the FDNY said. An investigation into the cause is ongoing.
