Description

Tour of University of Louisville Phase II Dormitories with JRA Architects. A joint event with AIACKC and A4LE. Mask policy: Parking: Description: This program will be a tour of the second phase building of a University of Louisville’s newest dormitory building providing students a safe, supportive, and enriching environment in which to learn and live. This dormitory is the second of two new residence halls on UofL’s Belknap Campus and will open its doors to first-year students in Fall 2022. Directly opposite of the phase I dormitory, phase II mirror’s the first phase in structure and design creating opportunities of economy of trades and bid packages. ICF construction of both buildings provided efficiency in constructability as well as additional benefits of sound proofing. Both buildings are 5-stories and add 130k s.f. of housing space each. The increased density of the site balances a desire to maximize the number of residents with a desire to respect the existing contextual scale. The brick, glass, and metal panel structures reinforce the university’s commitment to pedestrian oriented development and were positioned to celebrate and reinforce the importance of a landmark outdoor destination on campus. Learning objectives: • Construction manager collaboration to develop value-driven design alternatives. • Detailing opportunities and limitations of ICF construction for large scale projects. • Construction flow scheduling (which was instrumental in constructing 130,000sf in 14 months) • Architectural priorities in flood prone areas.
