School's out! Join us for a screening of the 1979 musical comedy Rock and Roll High School, with live music from Houston's Killer Hearts
Just in time for the end of the school year, the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art presents two movies celebrating both the high school experience and rock and roll, in association with Dangerous Media, Girls Rock Camp, and Zine Fest Houston.
The night of Friday, May 13 features Allen Arkush’s 1978 comedy Rock and Roll High School. Starring the seminal punk band The Ramones and their music, it’s one of the decade’s best teen flicks. P. J. Soles stars as Riff Randell, the biggest Ramones fan at Vince Lombardi High School. She’s determined to meet Joey Ramone and give him a song she wrote, but when Principal Togar (Warhol superstar Mary Woronov) confiscates her ticket for their upcoming concert, Randell leads a revolt to overthrow the school. The AV Club opines, “underneath its chipper, anything-for-laugh grin, Rock ‘N’ Roll is as subversive as teen movies get.” Houston’s Killer Hearts take the stage at 9 p.m. before the screening at 10.
