WESTPORT, CT — A 38-year-old Westport man was arrested on charges of first-degree criminal mischief, evading responsibility and other violations over the weekend after police said he crashed his lease car on the 14th hole at the golf course at Longshore Club Park. In addition to the above mentioned offenses, Drew Dewitt also was charged with failure to meet minimum insurance requirements and interfering with an officer. The incident occurred at about 12:20 a.m. on Saturday, when Westport police were contacted by Audi Customer Service to report that the crash and rollover sensors in one of its vehicles had activated in the area of 260 Compo Road South, which is the address of the golf course. "Contact with the operator was attempted by Audi, but could not be established," Westport police said in a statement. "Responding officers located the vehicle on the 14th hole of the course. It was disabled and had come to final rest within a sand trap. It had sustained heavy front end damage as well as airbag deployment and was found to be unoccupied." In checking the vehicle, officers determined that two people had been in the car. As officers searched the area, they soon spotted two people running on Compo Road South near the club and stopped them. "One of the two was the registered lease holder of the crashed vehicle; identified as Drew Dewitt," police said. "Although Dewitt denied operating the vehicle at the time of the accident, he was found to be in possession of its ignition key. Officers additionally could not locate proof of current insurance coverage for the vehicle." Dewitt was taken into custody and was released after posting a $400 bond. Westport police Lt. Anthony Prezioso told Patch that the golf course was damaged in the crash, "not just by the accident itself, but also by the subsequent recovery of the vehicle," which was inoperable and had to be removed from the trap. An estimate of the cost of the damage was not available; Patch reached out to Parks and Recreation Director Jennifer Fava for a comment but did not immediately receive a reply. Dewitt is scheduled to appear in Stamford Superior Court on Aug. 12.
