WESTPORT, CT — Two suspects, both teenagers, have been arrested by Westport police in connection with posting anti-police and anti-President Donald Trump flyers throughout the downtown business district in Westport last month.
"Through a review of surveillance video secured in the course of a neighborhood canvas of the affected area, detectives were able to obtain footage featuring images of two suspects," Westport police said in a statement. "This footage had been captured during the act of posting [flyers] on the date in question."
The two are accused of taping approximately 50 flyers to exterior walls and windows of downtown businesses over the weekend of Sept. 26-27; most of the signs were found in and around Church Lane.
Among the threatening messages written on the signs were "This Town Is Ours, Kill Trump, Fight the White," "Only Good Cop is a Dead Cop," and "Kill Trump, and once we win, we're coming to Westport," according to the news blog 06880.
Using the surveillance footage, Westport police were able to identify Westport resident Max Bernegger, 18, as one of the suspects. The identity of the other suspect, a juvenile, was not released by Westport police due to the teen's age.
Warrants were issued for both, charging them with second-degree breach of peace. The juvenile's case was referred to juvenile court, while Bernegger surrendered to police Thursday morning; he was released after posting a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Nov. 17.
