NEW ROCHELLE, NY — From the delights of the game of kings to the hands-on discovery of science and engineering and the foundations of a lifetime love of reading, the library is the place for kids to develop their passions this spring. The New Rochelle Public Library will be offering three special spring programs intended to engage and educate young children. In the "Building A Love Of Reading: Parent Child Literacy Workshops," educator Kim Block, the founder of Building Blocks, will be at the library on April 27, May 4 and May 11, from 4:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. for a series of workshops to promote early literacy. Parents will be introduced to strategies and creative activities to engage their children, ages pre-K to 2nd grade, as they read together. Parents learn creative strategies to engage their children and build a love of reading at the New Rochelle Public Library. (NRPL) In the "STEAM Ahead!" program for future scientists and engineers, children in grades 3-5 will be able to engage in fun STEAM activities and experiments on April 28, May 5, May 19 and May 26, from 4 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Participants will be able to use their problem-solving skills and the scientific method to come up with theories and test outcomes in a friendly and supportive environment. Topics will include animal adaptations, mystery powders, rocks and minerals, pollination, volcanoes and more. Through the "Chess at the Library" program, children ages 6-12, of all skill levels, will be able to improve their spatial skills, memory, creativity and concentration. Instruction with Premier Chess will take place on April 30, May 7 and May 14, at 10:30 a.m. All three spring programs will take place in the meeting room on the first floor at the Main Library located at 1 Library Plaza. All programs are free and no advance registration will be needed. Participants may attend any or all sessions. Since space is limited, the events will be first come, first served.
