Press release from Westport Downtown Merchants Association: Oct. 22, 2020 There's a flurry of activity this week at the Westport Downtown Merchants Association as the team is working hard to bring in hundreds of pumpkins, a huge amount of art supplies and pounds and pounds of Cortland orchard apples. The WDMA has partnered with the Westport Parks and Rec and Westport Police Department's PAL program to produce a Halloween Family Pumpkinfest on Sunday, October 25th from 10:30am to 5:30pm on Lower Main Street. Hundreds of costumed families will have the safe and welcoming opportunity to decorate pumpkins, take selfies in front of specially hand painted backdrops created by Artists Collective of Westport, MOCA Westport and One River, and take home some delicious apples, thanks to underwriting by Camp Playland of New Canaan - all for free. Under current safety guidelines, pre-registration was required, and we were quickly overwhelmed with more interested families than we had space to accommodate, and built a large wait list. We are so pleased to announce that Earth Animal has stepped up to help us financially underwrite an additional session, to welcome 30 more families to our event! While we are once again fully registered, families can still stop by in case there are last minute vacancies. This event will also be the inauguration of a new program to support our downtown merchants, called "Downtown Dollars". Gift Card prizes will be given to families with the most creative pumpkins that will be redeemable at participating downtown businesses. Much additional support was generously given by local businesses to make this event possible."The local in-town support we've gained has been a wonderful testament to the empathy for kids and families this year as we all take extra precautions around the traditional Halloween celebrations" said Jacqui Bidgood, WDMA Events Director. Staples High School SLOBS and PAL volunteers are helping out on the day. WDMA reminds everyone in town to shop local and support the sponsors!
