Description

NORTHERN VIRGINIA — Shepherd's Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church is seeking volunteers to drive seniors to medical and dental appointments or run errands to grocery stores and pharmacies. Shepherd's Center, an all-volunteer nonprofit group, is also seeking volunteers to assist with event planning, recruiting, marketing (newsletter, website and social media) and administrative tasks. There is no minimum commitment required for volunteers. Each volunteer can choose when, where, and how often to help. In a typical year, Shepherd's Center provides more than 2,000 rides: roughly 75 percent medical related, 25 percent grocery, and 1 percent for handy helper needs, according to Tom Callanen, board chair of Shepherd's Center. Shepherd's Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church is dedicated to assisting senior adults in maintaining an independent and safe lifestyle. The first Shepherd's Center was created in 1972 in Kansas City, Missouri. Today, there are more than 59 centers in 16 states affiliated with Shepherd's Centers of America, a network of interfaith community based organizations that provide meaning and purpose for senior adults. Volunteers must be over 50 years old and live in the McLean, Arlington, or Falls Church areas. The public can apply to be a volunteer by visiting the Shepherd's Center's website, emailing the center at [email protected], or calling the center at 703-506-2199 and leaving a message.
