NEWTON, MA — Newton North High School and Newton South High School were ranked among the top public high schools in Massachusetts in a pair of recent annual rankings. Niche.com's rankings released last week put Newton North at No. 6 among Massachusetts public high schools and Newton South at No. 12, while the U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings released on Tuesday had Newton North at 41st out of 339 public high schools and Newton South at 36th. Niche's 2022 rankings factored in academic and student life data from thousands of schools across the country. The most important factor was academics, but Niche also looked at culture and diversity, teachers, clubs and activities, sports and more. The U.S. News and World Report rankings are intended to show how well the nation's public schools serve all students, regardless of achievement level, by teaching them basic skills and preparing them for college-level work. "While as a district we are always pleased to be recognized, these rankings do not truly measure the quality of the educational program we offer in the Newton Public Schools," Superintendent David Fleishman said. "We have many ways in which we assess our progress and success in providing students with both the academic and the social emotional skills necessary to succeed in the world beyond the Newton Public Schools. We seek to prepare students to engage in a diverse and interconnected world and to address the complex challenges of today. Rankings seek to compare and contrast districts based upon data points that may or may not be relevant to our mission." "Therefore, I believe these types of rankings do not reflect the quality of our school district or any school district," he continued.
