Press release from Columbia Fire Department: April 25, 2022 On Saturday morning, April 30, 2022 members of the Columbia-Richland Fire Department will join our citizens in 'pulling for cures' at the 2022 Curing Kids Cancer Firetruck Pull. The annual fundraiser to support research and patient care services for children battling pediatric cancers will return IN-PERSON for the first time in three years. CRFD is proud to return as a partner in the event as teams will take turns pulling our firetrucks to see who can do it in the quickest times. The competition is slated to get started at 10 a.m. on April 30. It will be held on the 1200 block of Lady Street between Main Street and Sumter Street in downtown Columbia. "I am so thrilled that we once again are able to hold this awesome event in person," said Columbia-Richland Fire Chief Aubrey D. Jenkins, "Not only does it bring a lot of excitement and a fun spirit of competition to downtown but it also fosters a great deal of pride with our members who take part. Every dollar raised from this event will go a long way to helping children who are diagnosed with devastating cancers. It's an incredible feeling for our department and our firefighters to be part of that." Among the teams taking part in the event will be one made up of CRFD staff members. They will be pulling in memory of Killian Owen, whose courageous battle with cancer led to the founding of Curing Kids Cancer in 2005. Since its beginning the organization has gone on to raise more than $23 million for pediatric cancer research and treatment. Other teams taking part in the competition will also be pulling to honor or show support for a child that has been touched by cancer. Teams who complete the firetruck pull the fastest will be recognized with awards at the event as well as the top fundraising teams. The last time the Firetruck Pull was held in person was April of 2019 when more than $35,000 was raised. Over the past two years the event was held virtually due to the threat of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Registration for the event is still open for teams that would like to join!
