READING, MA — The town will pilot a modified version of its overnight parking ban this winter by only enforcing the prohibition when plowable snow is in the forecast. The Reading Police Department will not enforce the all-night parking ban that typically is in effect during the winter months. On nights when plowable snow is not expected, parking on town roadways will be allowed between 1-6 a.m. Police will work closely with the DPW to determine when plowable snow is expected, and parking will be prohibited overnight when significant snow is forecast. Residents will be notified via the town website, town and police social media accounts and Reading Community Television when a parking ban will be enforced. Residents may follow the Reading police on Facebook by clicking here, and Twitter by clicking here. "With many residents welcoming home family members who would otherwise be away at college, and others having financial difficulties due to the pandemic, we thought this change made a lot of sense to try now," Police Chief David Clark said in a statement. "We will pay close attention to the impacts of this change on the community at large and evaluate how to implement this approach for future years, and we will work to ensure that residents are aware of times when parking will be prohibited overnight due to weather." Residents with questions about this change may call the Reading Police Department at 781-944-1212.
