Press release from the City of Peoria: To acknowledge Arbor Day on Friday, April 29, the city of Peoria, along with the Peoria Park District and the South-West Kiwanis Club, will plant a tree at Constitution Gardens, 101 Morton Street, Peoria at 10:00 am. Located near the banks of the Illinois River, Constitution Garden has been maintained as a commemoration of the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution. It has been the site of several tree plantings in honor of Arbor Day. The public invited to attend. In addition to the tree planting, the Mayor and City Council will present a proclamation in honor of Arbor Day at the at the April 26 City Council meeting beginning at 6:00 pm. Assistant Deputy of Operations/Assistant Public Works Director Sie Maroon will accept on behalf of the City and the South-West Kiwanis. The public can attend in person, listen to the meeting on WCBU radio (89.9 FM), or view the meeting at the livestream at peoriagov.org. The public may also access the meeting on public access channel 22 or YouTube at Cityofpeoriatv. "Planting trees is an impactful way to reduce temperatures, provide shade and oxygen, give shelter and, and contribute to managing stormwater," stated Maroon. He continued, "we are proud to collaborate with our community partners in our historic Constitution Garden once again." Peoria was named a 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Public Works Department not only plants trees but also takes the branches that fall during storm events and makes use of them by chipping and shredding them into mulch to use in the landscaping around City properties. The city of Peoria Public Works Department will host a free mulch giveaway event on Saturday, April 30 from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Lester D. Bergsten Public Works Facility, 3505 N. Dries Lane. Mulch will be available to Peoria residents on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be two stations available: one for hand-shoveling mulch and another where City staff will assist in loading mulch into truck beds or trailers. Please bring your own shovel.
