Officials Name Southridge Students Killed, Deputy Injured In Crash

BEAVERTON, OR — Two students from Southridge High School were killed, and four others, including a sheriff's deputy, were critically hurt in a crash in Beaverton, police said. Matthew Arnaya, 17, and Juan Pacheco Aguilera, 16, were identified as the students who died in a crash around 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest Tualatin Valley Highway and Southwest Murray Boulevard, Beaverton police said. Arnaya and Aguilera were in a Nissan Altima that ran a red light and crashed into a car driven by an on-duty deputy with the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Pat Garrett identified the deputy as Michael Trotter. He was in critical condition at a Portland hospital, Garrett said. Three other people who were in the car with Aguilara and Arnaya were also in critical condition at local hospitals. They were also students at Southridge, according to school Superintendent Don Grotting. Their names were not released. Deputy Michael Trotter and his son. (Courtesy of the Trotter family) Trotter is married with a son and has been with the office since 2013, Garrett said. He became a full-time deputy two years after that. "He remains in critical but stable condition," Garrett said. "Deputy Trotter sustained life threatening injuries and has a long road ahead." Grotting, superintendent of the Beaverton School District, offered sympathy for the injured students. "Our hearts go out to their families and friends, and our thoughts with those who are currently hospitalized," he said. "We also want to extend our condolences and support to the Southridge community." Extra counselors were at the school to provide support for students and staff," he added. Garrett thanked Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue for their assistance and added that the Beaverton Police Department was investigating the crash.
