LOS ANGELES, CA — A man suspected of a random and unprovoked stabbing that took the life of a man as he was FaceTiming his brother near MacArthur Park is behind bars today, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Police arrested 43-year-old Anthony Madison in Boyle Heights in connection with the April 8 killing of Sergio Santay, the LAPD announced Tuesday. The slaying was captured on surveillance video, and the random nature of the attack shocked the city.
Authorities did not say how they identified Madison in connection to the slaying. He has been charged with one count of murder and is being held in lieu of $5 million bail.
According to the LAPD, Santay was video chatting with his brother while walking in the 600 block of South Bonnie Brae Street around 2:40 p.m. when he was approached by Madison, police said.
Without provocation, Madison stabbed Santay in the neck, police said.
"Surveillance footage revealed the suspect ran southbound on Bonnie Brae Street, (then) eastbound in the east-west alley north of Wilshire Boulevard, where he encountered two additional individuals sitting in the alley," an LAPD statement said.
Responding officers found Santay on the ground with a stab wound. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
