DUBLIN, CA — The City of Dublin is hosting a virtual Community Workshop Thursday for residents interested in the district drawing process. The City is in the process of transitioning from an at-large system to a district-based system, which will feature four districts of equal population, each represented by its own councilmember. On Jan. 4, 2022, the city received a letter from the law firm Shenkman & Hughes asserting that the city's at-large system violates the California Voting Rights Act of 2001. Given that many other cities have lost lawsuits related to this charge, the City Council adopted a resolution on Feb. 15 declaring its intent to transition to district-based elections, with the aim of having them finalized by the 2024 elections. On Thursday at 6, participants will learn to draw maps that keep together "communities of interest," or communities that share vital characteristics in common such as school attendance, demographics, income, natural dividing lines, and more. All drafts will be submitted to the Dublin City Council for consideration and discussion at two public hearings prior to final adoption. Click here for the Zoom link. The Webinar ID is 875 6036 0627 and the password is kRTJ2MBh. A second workshop will be held at the Wave Community Room (4201 Central Parkway) on Wednesday, May 4 at 6 p.m. See here to learn more about the background of the transition, watch presentations, and try drawing a district map.
