GREAT NECK, NY — The Great Neck Superintendent is reminding parents of measures the district is taking regarding COVID-19, known as the coronavirus, in a Feb. 28 letter to parents and guardians. Superintendent Teresa Prendergast said that the district is cleansing and sanitizing every building and staff is regularly cleaning "frequently touched surfaces" like door knobs, computers, handrails and more. Administrators will coordinate with other school districts to ensure consistency. "As always, the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff remain the District's primary concern. Rest assured that we will continue to follow the directions we receive from State and local authorities regarding the Novel Coronavirus, and will take the precautionary measures outlined above for the safety of our school community. I will continue to keep you updated on any information as I receive it. Thank you all for your cooperation," Prendergast said in the letter. See the letter here. Current symptoms reported for people with COVID-19 include mild to severe respiratory illness with fever, cough and difficulty breathing, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. Tensions over how to contain the coronavirus escalated this week in the United States as the death toll climbed, The Associated Press reported. Lawmakers expressed doubts about whether the government can ramp up testing to effectively mitigate the spread. The virus is spreading from person to person, and someone who is sick with the virus can spread the illness to others, medical officials said. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the new coronavirus. The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to the virus. The CDC recommends preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, such as: Avoid close contact with people who are sickAvoid touching your eyes, nose and mouthStay home if sickCover your cough or sneeze with a tissue and then throw the tissue awayClean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using regular household cleaning spray or wipes.
