TUCSON, AZ — A local 9-year-old boy received a special award last weekend for his quick thinking during a dog attack, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Cruz Sierras received the Pima County Hero's Award from the sheriff's department during the Pets of Pima Parade on Saturday.
Sierras was playing with his family dog in his yard in February when the dog attacked him and seriously injured his arm, according to the department.
Sierras' mom stopped the dog from attacked her son, but was attacked herself in the process, the department said. She sustained life-threatening injuries.
The boy realized it was an emergency and rain inside to call 911 and to gather supplies to help his mom.
"Throughout the ordeal, Cruz remained calm despite the pain from his injuries," the department said in a Facebook post. "His quick thinking and bravery allowed his mother to receive quick first aid for her potentially life threatening injuries."
Sierras received the the award for his "calm demeanor, quick actions, and bravery," the department said.
