CARTERSVILLE, GA — A Cartersville man is behind bars Wednesday after a drug deal led to a shooting in a parking lot on Old Mill Road, authorities said. Martiese Jamon McKay, 26, is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a statement from the Cartersville Police Department. Police learned of the incident when they were called to Piedmont Cartersville Medical Center Tuesday about a man with gunshot wounds, the statement said. Shooting victim Carson Darnell Smith, 21, then told investigators that he was shot during a drug transaction in the parking lot of 366 Old Mill Road. A website for The Park at 366 Apartments shows the complex is located at that address. Police did not confirm that the site of the shooting was the apartment's parking lot. With help from the Cobb County Police Department, Cartersville police investigators took McKay into custody Tuesday night in Kennesaw. As of Wednesday, McKay remains in the Bartow County Jail. Smith was charged with disorderly conduct and later released.
