Route 9 Traffic Stop Yields 'Ghost Guns,' State Police Say

WARE, MA — State police arrested two men on Monday after finding them in possession of "ghost guns" — privately made firearms with no serial numbers. The trooper saw the driver using a cell phone while operating his pickup truck, state police said, and pulled the man over near the intersection of Route 9 and Route 32 in Ware. During the stop, the driver opened the glove compartment, revealing what appeared to be a handgun, state police said in a news release. When police searched the vehicle, they found three guns with no serial numbers, plus one handgun manufactured legally. Police also found a jar of marijuana and brass knuckles in the truck. The driver, a 20-year-old from Gilbertville, was arrested on multiple gun law violations, possessing a class D substance, carrying a dangerous weapon, having an open container and using an electronic device while driving. The passenger, a 19-year-old from Ware, was charged with illegal possession of a gun, possession of a large capacity feeding device and holding an open container of alcohol.
