WEST HAVEN, CT — As a precaution, West Haven's beaches are closed until further notice due to the sewage spill in New Haven on Tuesday, July 7, Health Director Maureen B. Lillis said. No swimming, boating or fishing is allowed until water quality tests are deemed safe by the state Department of Public Health, Lillis said. The Greater New Haven Waste Water Treatment Plant said Wednesday 2.1 million gallons of raw sewage was "released" into the river. City health officials have tested 10 water sites along the shoreline and sent the samples to a DPH lab in Rocky Hill for processing. The city should have the results within 24 hours, Lillis said. The city will notify the public once Lillis is confident that the beaches are safe to reopen.
