SUMMARY DESCRIPTION Under general supervision, performs journey level plumbing duties to install, maintain and repair domestic water systems, waste systems and certain hot water heating also have a general understanding of irrigation /drip systems, throughout the District. Incumbent performs related work as required. As needed the position may be assigned to day shift, swing shift or graveyard shift. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS The Plumber I classification differs from the Plumber II classification in that the Plumber I does not perform in a lead capacity and performs plumbing functions that are less technical and complex in nature. EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Installs, maintains and repairs a wide variety of above and underground domestic water and waste systems, and plumbing fixtures and equipment; makes inspections for needed repairs; utilizes plumbing tools and equipment; maintains work sites and equipment in safe working order; reads and follows mechanical drawings of piping systems to conform with codes, regulations and safety orders; assists other skilled craft workers; cuts, threads, welds and installs pipe systems; operates backhoe or utilizes pick and shovel to uncover underground pipes, valves and waste lines; and performs related maintenance duties. Performs minor maintenance painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry, heating and ventilation, and similar work in the repair of walls, floors, ceilings, doors, locks, lockers, mechanical systems, and similar building surfaces, areas, and facilities. Assist journey level craft workers on major alterations, construction, and repair projects; order parts, materials and supplies; and provides technical guidance and training in plumbing / irrigation systems and operations to Site Facilities Coordinators and other District staff. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: Five (5) years of varied journey level plumbing and pipe fitting experience including experience in reading blueprints and maintaining "as built" drawings. OR Completion of a recognized four (4) year plumbing apprenticeship programs; or graduation from an accredited trade or technical school. AND Two (2) years of varied journey level plumbing experience under a licensed contractor performing varied commercial and residential maintenance and repairs. Knowledge of: Second year apprentice level plumbing and pipe fitting techniques; welding techniques; knowledge of state and local plumbing, mechanical fire and health codes; proper use of plumbing hand and machine tools; safe and effective repair techniques; knowledge of domestic water systems, hot water heating systems, including pumps and coils; venting, installation of sinks, toilets and other appliances associated with the plumbing trades and the operation of drain cleaning equipment. Skill at: Working independently; understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions; understanding and applying applicable building codes; reading and interpreting blueprints and preparing rough sketches of work; diagnosing plumbing / Irrigation defects and making repairs; welding, threading and soldering pipes; performing manual labor; maintaining necessary written records and reports; and establishing and maintaining effective working relationship with those contacted in course of work; and communicating effectively verbally and in writing, PC-computer skills. Licenses/Certificates: Possession of and maintaining a valid Nevada State Operator's license with a driving record acceptable to the district. Certification: AHERA 16 hour asbestos training. Asbestos certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training. Certification: OSHA Lead Action Training. Certification may be required within the first 12 months of employment. Employer will provide training. Special Requirements: Some incumbents in the Plumber I classification may be required to assist or perform work associated with other trades, May be required to physically perform AHERA Class III disturbances to asbestos containing building materials as directed in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. May be required to physically perform OSHA lead remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations. May be required to physically perform mold remediation in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations.
