Description

QUINCY, MA — Traffic backups developed quickly in Quincy and Weymouth late Tuesday afternoon when the Fore River Bridge got stuck in the upright position. Police were asking drivers to avoid the area during rush hour with detours in place. The bridge was closed for more than an hour before it was finally able to be reopened — and traffic resumed flowing — around 6 p.m. The group Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station, which stages protests at the nearby natural gas compressor station, reported traffic was backing up on Church Street near intersection of North Street in Weymouth. Traffic was being rerouted from Fore River Bridge Route 3A onto Route 53 in Weymouth Landing. The group has asked the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for an assessment on the risks of having an accident at the compressor station affect travel across the bridge.
