WEST HAVEN, CT — City officials are apologizing for a tattered American flag that has been on display at Bradley Point Park in West Haven.
The flag's condition was recently pointed out by Darryl Cummings in a post on the West Haven – The Way It Is community Facebook page.
Public Works Commissioner Tom J. McCarthy apologized Friday for the "unacceptable condition" of the American flag in Bradley Point Park.
"A temporary American flag provided by the West Haven Fire Department will replace the tattered flag shortly," McCarthy said in a statement. "I want to thank Chief James P. O'Brien for his assistance with the temporary flag. As you know, the Department of Public Works is charged with maintaining the integrity of the American flag at Bradley Point's Veterans Walk of Honor. We take this responsibility very seriously, as this flag represents the unwavering service and selfless sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. As the commissioner of the department, I take full responsibility for failing to properly maintain the flag and assure the people of West Haven that this will never happen again. We need to do better, and we will do better. I want to thank Darryl Cummings for pointing out the condition of the flag, and I thank him for his service."
