An outdoor lawn concert and poetry performance with barbecue (and vegetarian options) for dinner to benefit civics education initiatives Join us Saturday June 11th for an evening of Mountain Music & More -- a fundraiser event at the historic setting of Patterson's Mill (private venue in Martinsburg, West Virginia*). Johnny Staats, master of the mandolin, along with Robert Shafer, award-winning guitarist will entertain us over dinner. Poet Laureate of West Virginia, Marc Harshman will be performing a poem for the occasion as well. Join the friends of the Byrd Center for an outdoor concert and barbecue (with vegetarian options) to fundraise for the civics education initiatives of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education. Tickets are $150.00 which includes meal, concert, and a tax deductible donation to the Byrd Center. The Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History and Education was established in 2002 to promote a better understanding and appreciation of the United States Congress. Located within a 2-hour drive from Washington D.C., the Byrd Center is situated on the campus of Shepherd University. The Byrd Center advances representative democracy by promoting a better understanding of the United States Congress and the Constitution through programs and research that engage citizens. The Byrd Center Teacher Institute was established in 2016 as a new civics education initiative designed to create and disseminate innovative learning resources for secondary educators to teach about the United States Constitution, Congress, and representative democracy. We develop a range of education resources utilizing inquiry based, experiential, and primary source learning methodologies with a special focus on designing resources that employ the regional history and culture of West Virginia in civics instruction.
