Pilgrim Nuclear Station Decommission Contract Awarded

PLYMOUTH, MA — A contract to decommission the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station has been awarded to Comprehensive Decommissioning International LLC, according to the Cleantech Canada. Cleantech reported that the decommission process will begin this year and that within a few years the site could be open for commercial or industrial use. Cleantech reported that CDI will decommission, demolish and clean up the facility. Used nuclear fuel will be placed in "structurally impregnable" dry-storage systems. The decision to shutter Pilgrim was made in 2016 amid a series of safety violations. At the time, Louisiana-based owner Entergy said it made the decision "because of poor market conditions, reduced revenues, and increased operational costs."
