You are invited to a week of professional development to introduce you to a new course called Essential Math for College and Careers (EMC2). Are you a 7-12th grade math teacher in Vermont? EMC2 was designed by and for Vermont math educators to help Vermont schools increase college and career readiness of Vermont high school students. In 2018, the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation (VSAC), together with Vermont State Colleges (VSCS) and Vermont Agency of Education (AOE), launched a project to help Vermont schools achieve the goal of graduating all Vermont high school students with solid algebraic problem-solving skills and a basic understanding of functions and geometry concepts. In the summer of 2018, the consortium (VSAC-VSCS-AOE) brought together a group of high school math teachers and post-secondary math faculty to design EMC2. Between 2019 and 2022, EMC2 has run in 20 classes in 13 schools across Vermont. Cost to attend: $250/week (cancel 7 days prior for full refund).This training runs daily July 25-29, 2022 at VT Technical College.We will meet at the Langevin House starting at 8:30am.Class begins at 9AM and includes a 45-minute lunch break.We will conclude at 3:45pm each day.This dynamic, week-long training provides participants: instruction and practice in using formative assessment effectively,practice crafting instructional strategies to engage students fully,a chance to share ideas for building a rich learning environment,how to utilize performance-based assessment throughout the course,30 professional learning hours (attendance certificate provided upon completion),and a copy of the EMC2 curriculum.Using the curriculum and concepts from EMC2 as a backdrop for learning, participants practice: gradual release of instruction,practicing probing questions without leading students,using formative assessment lessons,and sample engaging entry events for starting units.
