Description
Press release from Salt Lake County District Attorney:
April 22, 2022
Today, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office published a finding from our Conviction Integrity Unit. The Conviction Integrity Unit has spent the last year reviewing the following case. The purpose of the CIU is to review and investigate post-conviction claims of innocence and due process then make recommendations to the District Attorney about the disposition of those claims.
The panel recommended to vacate. The District Attorney's Office filed a motion to vacate the conviction because of the recommendation.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said, "Truth, transparency, and justice are the cornerstones in which our criminal justice system is built. If someone is wrongfully convicted, we have a duty to right that wrong. Our Conviction Integrity Unit makes all decisions based on the evidence and does a diligent job going through each fact. I accept their recommendation and agree with their finding. Justice is not merely driven by outcome but also by the adherence to a Constitutional process from which we derive the legitimacy of our convictions both ethically and procedurally. Every review done by the CIU will be published unedited for the sake of transparency."
